An Open, Social Practice

ifyoutalkedtopeople - gapingvoidAwhile ago Steve Bendt and I put some of what we thought we knew about social technology and how it could influence marketing into a slideshow. We called it "An Open, Social Approach." It was principles, kind of airy stuff without a ton of practice, based on what we thought we'd learned from building BSN (BlueShirt Nation) and Giftag and some other stuff. Now, about nine months later, we have a growing body of practical implementations at Best Buy we can compare and contrast with the principles laid out back then.

Barry Judge reviews the principles and their practice as part of the twitter.com/twelpforce experiment and John Bernier gives a review of the experience of managing the project and finally Lars Forsberg recaps the whole development experience behind @twelpforce and Best Buy Connect.

You can also watch the practice unfold daily at IdeaX, The Best Buy Idea Exchange.

From where I'm standing it looks like the principles translate pretty nicely into practice. But I'd like to ask you all to help compare and contrast the principles versus the practice - I'm only one point of view afterall.

bsn continues

Friday, February 13, 2008, the 'original' BlueShirt Nation was archived and rolled into the next BlueShirt Nation - BSN Mix. BSN Mix is a built on the Headmix platform and allows users to access the network via multiple channels - web, Outlook plug-in and SMS.  Why? Two words - Signal Strength.

Computer World Presentation

Steve Bendt and I are going to be presenting at the Computer World’s Premier IT Leaders Conference in the beginning of March. The presentation is called "Fight Club. How we built a social network at Best Buy and how it built us. Using DYI software to have fun, piss people off and solve business problems." Nice huh? Steve said I must have been angry when I came up with the title but I think it'll actually be an interesting look at user oriented app design. Here's our final slides with our presentation notes attached. Please post any comments, questions or critiques.

Because the story Steve Bendt and I told at BIF-4 is kind of a blur, I'm reposting a recap written by Braden Kelly . I'm also posting the pre-story notes Steve and I put together as a way of comparing what we wanted to say with what we actually said. I'll also be posting the video of our schpiel in the near future.
