in the margin

"If you want to make enemies, try to change something."

in the margin

"The thing about democracy, beloveds, is that it is not neat, orderly, or quiet. It requires a certain relish for confusion."

in the margin

"Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide."

sweet irony

I may be slow but it just dawned on me while listening to Iowa voters on NPR leading up to the caucuses. The reporter was interviewing an elderly couple who were willingly portrayed as conservative evangelical Christians. The woman was recently quite taken with Huckabee in favor of Mitt Romney. While the man, after hearing a recent Romney speech, felt assured that Romney would not let his religious views influence his duties as President.

Would not let his views influence his duties as President. Huh.

Whether or not his views will influence his execution of his duties as POTUS, I find it an irresistible irony that evangelical Christian conservatives would so need the reassurance.

no more moldy figs for president

"open government"

Obama's technology document begins with a set of policy goals:

  • Ensure the full and free exchange of information among Americans through an open Internet and diverse media outlets.
  • Create a transparent and connected democracy.
  • Encourage the deployment of a modern communications infrastructure.
  • Employ technology and innovation to solve our nation's most pressing problems, including reducing the costs of health care, encouraging the development of new clean energy sources, and improving public safety.
  • Improve America’s competitiveness.
